About me

I qualified in hypnotherapy in year 2000 following a professional course at the Institute of Clinical Hypnosis which is based in London at Kings College. I joined the National Council for Hypnotherapy and have progressed to Registered status. I soon realised that I wanted to specialise in working with women's issues - the kinds of problems that women tend to experience in their lives:

Weight loss and eating disorders
Anxiety and phobias
Stress
Depression
Childbirth and conception
Panic and anxiety disorder
Serious illness and pain management
Bereavement
Confidence and relaxation
Relationships
Designing positive futures
Spiritual development

This list is not exhaustive but provides some ideas of the problems that I deal with day to day. Hypnotherapists tend to develop specialisms depending on their individual areas of interest and expertise. I am skilled with weight problems, other therapists have other skills and so it is worth looking at the two main hypnotherapy websites to check if there is a specialist near you to treat your individual issue. Details of the hypnotherapy organizations are on the contact page. I am not skilled with smoking cessation, so if you wish to stop smoking I will refer you another therapist.

I am interested in womens' lives and how to help them take control of the parts that aren't working. This could mean healing past traumas or dealing with the legacies of abusive relationships or losing weight and increasing confidence. It is also possible to design positive futures for you by utilising the power of hypnosis and guided imagery. You can step into your future life knowing that it is going to be full of positive things. You can realise your dreams and ensure your future life has all the right ingredients in it - whether that is a slim body or happier relationships, more money or better confidence. All these things are within your grasp when you choose to focus your energies inside. Why? Because inside you is where the the control centre is located - inside your unconscious mind - hypnosis helps to gain access to this area and work positively to make the changes that you want.

When you work with hypnosis and altered states it is inevitable that you get closer to your inner self, you might call this your spiritual identity or the real you. As I gained more experience with past life therapy, I discovered that this area of work was leading me to explore what lay beyond. Therefore, in 2004, I trained with Dr Michael Newton and his team to practice Life Between Lives Regression Therapy (LBL). This is the deepest journey in trance that takes you to memories of your life as a soul, in between incarnations. I qualified as a Certified LBL practitioner and now offer this spiritual journey in addition to past life work. I have also served on the Board of the Newton Institute for Life Between Lives Hypnotherapy as Director of Development.

I enjoy training hypnotherapy students so they can gain the kind of experience to deliver these powerful treatments to more potential clients. I am on the faculty of the Institute of Clinical Hypnosis where I teach courses in pain management, EFT and weight loss therapy. If you feel you have an interest in hypnotherapy you can take the basic foundation course and explore hypnosis for your own personal growth. This course is also the prelude to the full professional course - the qualification for utilising hypnotherapy with clients.

I believe everyone should have a chance to make their lives as fulfilling as possible. To me that means having more of what you love and less of what is holding you back or making you unhappy. The key to success, I believe, is to get control of your mind. You may think your mind is under control but the reality is that it does exactly what it wants. It is the source of anxiety, worries, anger, lack of confidence and it loves to be negative. When you learn to master self hypnosis and EFT, you will be able to focus on your positive goals without that self defeating internal chatter that holds you back. You will soon find that it is easy and enjoyable to work at translating your personal dreams and life goals into reality.

Is hypnotherapy the right treatment for you?

Working with hypnosis allows us to work directly with the control centre for everything - the unconscious mind. If you have things you want to change in your life you have probably already understood that it is the mind that needs to accept these changes. Hypnotherapy allows us to start to have control over our minds and our emotions, instead of the normal state which is one of feeling 'out of control'. We use hypnosis as a method of making the therapy more effective. The therapeutic techniques used may be similar to those used by more traditional 'talking therapies' but the use of hypnosis or trance work make the therapies much more successful.

Many people who explore getting help from a hypnotherapist have concerns and questions about what it will be like. There is a prevailing worry that the therapist will have control over them or be able to put them 'under'. Whatever you may have read there is no such thing as 'under'. Trance is the word we use to describe an altered state of mind which enables us to work effectively with a client to help make changes happen for them. So one way of thinking about trance is as a vehicle for therapy.

Trance is an altered state that everyone is capable of achieving. In fact if you go to bed at night and fall asleep you automatically pass through the state of somnambulism which is what we are aiming for. My skill just allows you to get to that state and stay there while we work at your problems. You can improve your ability to get into trance just by practising (once you know how to do it) and once you have this skill you can use it to improve every aspect of your life. This is because this amazing state makes you more confident and relaxed, improves concentration and focus, allows you to be more creative and also helps get control of that conscious mind - the bit of you that talks to you when you are awake and seems to do whatever it wants.

This insight can help you to see how changing the quality of your thoughts can actually change your life. Understanding that problems with your conscious mind - the part that thinks when you are awake - originate from memories, thoughts, beliefs and behaviours that are located within the subconscious or unconscious. This is the giant data storage facility that we don't normally have access to during the waking state. Everything is filtered and given meaning by the conscious mind. So it makes sense that if you want to make positive changes in the unconscious you first have to get past the conscious mind. Hypnosis is the method used to achieve this result. The feeling of being in trance is associated with bypassing the conscious mind. You don't have to be asleep for this to happen or even lying down - but you will feel relaxed, energised, more in control, very focussed and able to concentrate fully on what is going on.

Another popular misconception
is that you have to get into a deep trance in order to make effective changes. The truth is that ability to trance and suggestibility are two totally different things. Many clients make lasting changes but only experience trance lightly - it is a very personal and unique experience.

you are signalling to your unconscious mind
that you are no longer prepared to put up with
feeling the way you do now - you signal your intention to change. That sends a powerful
message to your mind.' DB

It is vitally important that you find a therapist who is right for you and who is experienced and skilled with your particular needs and wishes. You will not be able to get what you want unless you feel confident and relaxed with your therapist. Effective therapy requires a 'healing partnership' to be established between therapist and client. This can't be achieved without trust and respect on both sides. To enable me to be effective I have specialised and now work mainly with women and their issues - choosing to concentrate on the therapies that are relevant to women's problems. However, I will be happy to talk to you and advise you on how you can find a good therapist to help you if I am not able to do so.

Hypnotherapy is very powerful medicine but the benefits are amazing and positive - feelings of relaxation, increasing inner confidence and a more positive attitude to life are all natural side effects from doing this important inner work. Just by practising hypnosis and using the CD products that I have made will ensure that improvements are experienced in every area of life. Problems that seem insurmountable soon fade into proper perspective. It makes you wonder why we are not all doing it every day! It is certainly more effective at making you feel better than headache tablets, copious amounts of red wine or financially damaging shopping trips. Not that any of these coping strategies don't have their proper place in life! It's just that hypnotherapy is better ...

Your individual treatment will be centred on exactly what you want to achieve so I ensure the work is focussed on the successful resolution of your problems. EFT is particularly successful when used to work on releasing negative thoughts, memories and behaviours so that positive changes can take effect more easily. Hypnosis and EFT are both rapid therapies and you can usually expect that from two to five treatments will bring about an effective and lasting change. Sometimes serious problems that have been with the client for many years take a little longer to heal properly, I will always endeavour to give you a realistic idea of what to expect from your treatment. Most people who have hypnosis and who learn self hypnosis with me find that the good feelings are something that they wish to take into their future lives. In fact, clients often report continuing improvements in their lives as a whole as a result of practising self hypnosis and EFT. All clients work with audio CDs of self hypnosis designed and recorded by me so that work can be done at home and as long as desired. This significantly speeds up the healing process and allows clients to practice self hypnosis at home and so become familiar with trance and deep relaxation.

About professional standards

The hypnotherapy profession has been working hard in recent years to develop voluntary self regulation within the framework of the FIH (Prince's Federation for Integrated Health). Around that time the Department for Health set up a body for regulating the complementary therapies - the CNHC (Complementary and Natural Health Council). Hypnotherapy has now been accepted into the professional disciplines that may be registered with the CNHC and so it is with great pleasure that I can include my CNHC registration on this website. This is a huge step forward for properly qualified hypnotherapists and it will, over time, spell the end of unqualified and unregistered individuals and improve the public's confidence in our profession. Many thanks are due to those who have worked so hard within my own professional association, the National Council for Hypnotherapy (NCH) to achieve this integration.

Summary from the CNHC website:

cnhc logo

Skills for Health, an independent agency, is responsible for establishing National Occupational Standards across a wide range of health care disciplines, including many complementary therapies.  National Occupational Standards define what a competent person should be able to do when they carry out a particular activity or function.

If a practitioner has the CNHC quality mark it means that they:

Have undertaken a programme of education and training which meets, as a minimum, the National Occupational Standards for that profession/discipline, or

Have achieved competency to the level of the National Occupational Standards for the therapy/discipline concerned by means of relevant experience of at least three years and /or relevant training and been assessed by their peers as having met those standards, and

Have met the agreed standards of proficiency for that profession/discipline,
Have provided an independent reference of their good character,
Have declared that they do not hold a criminal record
Have declared that they have not been the subject of any disciplinary or civil proceedings against them in relation to their practice
Have declared that there are no health issues that impact on their ability to practice,
Hold current professional indemnity insurance
Have agreed to abide by the CNHC Code of Conduct, Performance and Ethics

My current CNHC registration can be found at the CNHC website
