What is hypnotherapy?

Many people who look at having some sort of help from a hypnotherapist have concerns and questions about what it will be like. There is a prevailing worry that the therapist will have control over them or be able to put them 'under'. Whatever you may have read there is no such thing as 'under'. Trance is the word we use to describe an altered state of mind which enables us to work effectively with a client to help make changes happen for them. So one way of thinking about trance is as a vehicle for therapy. Indeed many traditional therapists within the psychotherapy professions use hypnosis as part of their therapeutic toolkit.

Trance is an altered state that everyone is capable of achieving. In fact if you go to bed at night and fall asleep you automatically pass through the state of somnambulism which is what we are aiming for. My skill just allows you to get to that state and stay there while we work at your problems. You can improve your ability to get into trance just by practising (once you know how to do it) and once you have this skill you can use it to improve every aspect of your life. This is because this amazing state makes you more confident and relaxed, improves concentration and focus, allows you to be more creative and also helps get control of that conscious mind - the bit of you that talks to you when you are awake and seems to do whatever it wants.

Another popular misconception is that you have to get into a deep trance in order to make effective changes. The truth is that ability to trance and suggestibility are two totally different things. Many clients make lasting changes but only experience trance lightly - it is a very personal and unique experience. It is vitally important that you find a therapist who is right for you and who is experienced and skilled with your particular needs and wishes. You will not be able to get what you want unless you feel confident and relaxed with your therapist. Effective therapy requires a 'healing partnership' to be established between therapist and client. This can't be achieved without trust and respect on both sides. To enable me to be effective I have specialised and now work mainly with women and their issues - choosing to concentrate on the therapies that are relevant to women's problems. However I will be happy to talk to you and advise you on how you can find a good therapist to help you if I am not able to do so.

EFT explained

EFT is the main secondary treatment that I use with all clients. It is relatively new but based on the principals of Chinese medicine which are over 5000 years old. EFT stands for Emotional Freedom Technique. It relies on acuptapping to make changes in the meridian energy system and by doing so makes lasting changes in the psyche and emotions of the client. It is a brilliant therapeutic partner to hypnotherapy and it can be taught easily to be used at home so it is very empowering.

How to choose a therapist to help you

Finally, you need to know that your chosen therapist is properly qualified and is a member of a professional organisation which demands high standards of practice. The National Council for Hypnotherapy (NCH) is the only professional body in the field of hypnotherapy which is a true member co-operative and run by members for members. It has an elected executive which ensures that the NCH is commited to high standards, continuing professional development and members must abide by agreed Codes of Conduct, Ethics and Discipline. By choosing to go to an NCH hypnotherapist you ensure you will be protected from unqualified and unethical practitioners.

The NCH can be contacted at www.hypnotherapists.org.uk

The aims of the NCH are:

  • To raise the standards of Hypnotherapy in the UK in every possible way.
  • To maintain a Common Code of Ethics and Practice & a Complaints & Disciplinary Procedure to deal with complaints from any source.
  • To encourage high training standards and to move towards nationally recognised qualifications in Hypnotherapy.
  • To encourage links with other interested organisations and professions.
  • To provide a professional and unequalled service to its members, the public, the media, and affiliates.
  • To promote within the profession, the dissemination of information about Hypnotherapy through its Journal, Seminars and Conferences.

In addition to my NCH membership I am on the UKCHO (United Confederation of Hypnotherapy Organisations) National Register which is a new register designed to help members of the public find properly qualified therapists. As our profession works towards higher standards and one united professional body (under the auspices of the Prince's Foundation for Integrated Health - FIH) I believe it is important for my clients to understand these issues.
